 In Libia, Colonel Qaddafi's armed forces are using machine guns and fighter jets against pro-democracy protesters -- hundreds have already been killed and, without immediate international action, the situation could spiral into a national bloodbath.

The United Nations Security Council and the European Union are in emergency sessions on Libya this week. If we can pressure them to agree to a no-fly zone over Libya, a freeze of Qaddafi's, his family's and his high command's assets, targeted sanctions against the regime, and international prosecution of any military officials involved in the crackdown -- this could stop airforce bombings and split Qaddafi's command structure.

Together, we've sent 450,000 emails to the UN Security Council, "overwhelming" the Council President and and helping to win targeted sanctions and a justice process for the Libyan people. Now, to stop the bloodshed, we need a massive outcry for a no-fly zone.

As Qaddafi's jets drop bombs on the Libyan people, the UN Security Council will decide in 48 hours whether to impose a no-fly zone to keep the government's warplanes on the ground.  If he can't dominate the air, he loses a key weapon in a war in which civilians are paying the heaviest price. But as long as his helicopter gunships and bombers are in the air, the death toll will rise. We have just 48 hours left -- let's hit 1 million messages to stop Qaddafi's deadly attacks before it's too late:

Selling of Innocents [A Venda de Inocentes] by Ruchira Gupta

This HBO documentary (in 5 parts) exposes the trafficking in women and girls that occurs from Nepal to India. The video includes interviews with child prostitutes, a procurer and people who have sold relatives to be sex slaves. It tells the story of the people involved in the booming sex industry of the poor areas in Asia.

I found that there was a system to procure girls and carry them in trucks to the Indo-Nepal border and then in trains to brothels in Mumbai’s Kamatipura. I saw procurers on the prowl, parents selling their daughters, money changing hands and tin-roofs and radios in Nepali homes with daughters in Mumbai." Ruchira knew she had a story and rang up her friends to help find someone who would be interested in it.

Once the 40-day shooting schedule was over, Ruchira realized that she 'couldn't walk away'. To begin with she admitted the girl she bought in Katmandu, into a school. She then took her documentary to different forum to raise awareness on this global crime against women and girls. It was screened at the Stockholm World Congress on Sexual Exploitation of Children, UNICEF regional workshops, UNAIDS conference in Manila and UN in New York. The 47-minute film was made for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and she won an Emmy for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in 1997 for it.

The APNE AAP ORGANIZATION

Apne Aap mobilizes and mentors community based groups of trafficked and vulnerable girls and women to empower each other. The Centres provide the safe space and opportunities for legal, education and livelihood training to the groups of girls and women to develop the skills and abilities to resist traffickers. This strategy has a) empowered mothers to rescue their daughters and put them into schools breaking the cycle of caste-based intergenerational prostitution and b) empowered women to rescue each other by demanding access to the right to livelihoods other than prostitution, education and safe housing in their small group structures.

It brings out its own newspaper, Red Light Despatch, which is written by women and girls in prostitution for their sisters who are survivors and victims’. Este documentário da HBO, dividido em 5 partes, expõe o tráfico de mulheres e meninas que ocorrem do Nepal para a Índia. Este vídeo inclui entrevistas com crianças que se prostituem, um olheiro do tráfico e pessoas que já venderam parentes para serem escravas sexuais. Este documentário conta a história das pessoas envolvidas na indústria sexual nas áreas pobres da Ásia que cresce de forma exponencial.

“Eu descobri que existe um sistema que procura e carrega meninas em caminhões até a fronteira Indo-Nepalesa, despachando-as em trens para bordéis na Kamatipura (o maior e mais antigo bairro dedicado à prostituição) em Bombai. Vi olheiros perambulando, pais vendendo suas filhas, dinheiro passando por várias mãos e telhados de estanho e rádios em casas nepalesas com crianças em Bombai”. Ruchira sabia que ela tinha uma história para contar, e ligou para seus amigos para que eles lhe ajudassem a achar alguém interessado em escutá-la.

Depois dos 40 dias de gravação terem acabado, Ruchira percebeu que ela não poderia simplesmente ir embora. Começou matriculando a garota que comprara em Catmandu em uma escola. Depois disso, ela levou seu documentário à vários fóruns diferentes para chamar atenção à este crime global contra mulheres e crianças. Seu documentário foi exibido no Congresso Mundial de Exploração Sexual de Crianças (promovido em Estocolmo), em Workshops regionais da UNICEF, na Conferência da UNAIDS em Manila (capital das Filipinas) e na ONU em Nova Iorque. O documentário de 47 minutos foi feito para a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Corporação Canadense de Transmissão) e ela ganhou o Emmy de Jornalismo Investigativo Ilustre em 1997.

Apne Aap mobiliza e orienta grupos comunitários de mulheres e crianças vulneráveis e traficadas para que deem forças umas às outras. Os Centros além de fornecem espaço seguro, capacitam estes grupos de mulheres e crianças para desenvolverem perícias e habilidade para resistirem ao tráfico, através de orientação jurídico, capacitações em educação e treinamentos sobre meios de vida. Esta estratégia faz com que a) mães fortalecidas salvem suas filhas as colocando em escolas quebrando o ciclo de prostituição recorrente pelas gerações estabelecido pelo sistema de castas e b) mulheres fortalecidas salvem umas as outras pela luta pelo direito de lutar por outros meios de vida que não sejam baseados na prostituição por educação e moradia segura na estrutura de suas pequenas comunidades.

Ele publica seu próprio jornal, o Red Light Despatch (O Despacho da Luz Vermelha), escrito por mulheres e crianças na prostituição para suas irmãs que são sobreviventes e vítimas. In India, all women must confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. The consequences of this preference is a disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until death they face a constant threat of violence.

The numbers are staggering. Since 1980, an estimated 40 million women are 'missing,' by way of abortion, neglect or murder. 7,000 female fetuses are aborted every day according to the U.N., aborted solely because they're girls. One dowry death is reported every 77 minutes. Countless others are never known. The documentary "Undesired" tells their story.

Today, eighty percent of Indian states are now facing a shortage of women. To compensate for this differential, young, unknowing women are bought from surrounding countries like Bangladesh and sold to young bachelors. Not knowing a word of the language, these trafficked women now face the same kind of violence as other Indian women. The Alexia Foundation gave the grant to make this documentary possible. The Apne Aap Foundation was created in 2002 by Ruchira Gupta. It supports women and children by asserting their rights to dignified lives and livelihoods, by advocating their cause to trigger internal policy and institutional changes. It’s main objective also is to fight the organized sex traffic that emerges from India’s problems.
