Rainbow Town [Cidade Arco-Íris]

As war raged, she had to make a choice; to protect the orphaned children forced into her life or abandon them and go in search of her own family. Her name is Ma Feeta and today, she lives with 86 children at a rural West African farm called Rainbow Town.

Filmed in the upcountry of Liberia, Rainbow Town welcomes you into their lives, revealing how they survived one of Africa’s bloodiest civil wars and how they cope as a family in its aftermath. Narrated by Ma Feeta, three of the children – Alice, Taylor, and Faith – and Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; the story unearths the price of war, while illustrating the strength of the human spirit.

Selling of Innocents [A Venda de Inocentes] by Ruchira Gupta

This HBO documentary (in 5 parts) exposes the trafficking in women and girls that occurs from Nepal to India. The video includes interviews with child prostitutes, a procurer and people who have sold relatives to be sex slaves. It tells the story of the people involved in the booming sex industry of the poor areas in Asia.

I found that there was a system to procure girls and carry them in trucks to the Indo-Nepal border and then in trains to brothels in Mumbai’s Kamatipura. I saw procurers on the prowl, parents selling their daughters, money changing hands and tin-roofs and radios in Nepali homes with daughters in Mumbai." Ruchira knew she had a story and rang up her friends to help find someone who would be interested in it.

Once the 40-day shooting schedule was over, Ruchira realized that she 'couldn't walk away'. To begin with she admitted the girl she bought in Katmandu, into a school. She then took her documentary to different forum to raise awareness on this global crime against women and girls. It was screened at the Stockholm World Congress on Sexual Exploitation of Children, UNICEF regional workshops, UNAIDS conference in Manila and UN in New York. The 47-minute film was made for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and she won an Emmy for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in 1997 for it.

The APNE AAP ORGANIZATION

Apne Aap mobilizes and mentors community based groups of trafficked and vulnerable girls and women to empower each other. The Centres provide the safe space and opportunities for legal, education and livelihood training to the groups of girls and women to develop the skills and abilities to resist traffickers. This strategy has a) empowered mothers to rescue their daughters and put them into schools breaking the cycle of caste-based intergenerational prostitution and b) empowered women to rescue each other by demanding access to the right to livelihoods other than prostitution, education and safe housing in their small group structures.

It brings out its own newspaper, Red Light Despatch, which is written by women and girls in prostitution for their sisters who are survivors and victims’. The women of Apne Aap want a world in which it is unacceptable to buy or sell another human being and to imagine an economy in which one does not force one to sell oneself. [Source: Apne Aap]

Wasteland [Lixo Extraordinário]

Filmed over nearly three years, the WASTE LAND documentary follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT, COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Invisible Children [Crianças Invisíveis]

This is a documentary about Uganda, made by Jason Russel, Laren Poole & Bobby Bailey. In 2003, they were young filmmakers that traveled to Africa to find a story. What they found was beyond that: a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.

After returning to the States, they created the documentary "Invisible Children: Rough Cut", a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda's night commuters and child soldiers. They also started a Foundation to help people from Uganda, called Invisible Children.

History of the War

The war in northern Uganda has been called the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today. For the past 23 years, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda (GoU) have been waging a war that has left nearly two million innocent civilians caught in the middle. The GoU's attempt to protect its citizens from this rebel militia has largely failed, resulting in an entire generation of youth that has never known peace.

The LRA rebel movement can be traced back to a woman named Alice Lakwena. In the 1980s, Lakwena believed the Holy Spirit spoke to her and ordered her to overthrow the Ugandan government for being unjust to the Acholi. Lakwena and her followers, known as the Holy Spirit Movement, gained momentum as resentment toward the government increased. When Lakwena was exiled and no clear leader of the movement was left, Joseph Kony, who claimed to be Lakwena’s cousin, took control and transformed Lakwena’s rebel army into the LRA.

Kony's LRA did not receive the same support as the Holy Spirit Movement from the Acholi people. With dwindling approval for their cause and heightened government offensives, the rebels resorted to abducting children and indoctrinating them into their ranks. It is estimated that more than 90% of the LRA’s troops were abducted as children. [Source: Invisible Children]

Undesired [Indesejadas] - By Walter Astrada

In India, all women must confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. The consequences of this preference is a disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until death they face a constant threat of violence.

The numbers are staggering. Since 1980, an estimated 40 million women are 'missing,' by way of abortion, neglect or murder. 7,000 female fetuses are aborted every day according to the U.N., aborted solely because they're girls. One dowry death is reported every 77 minutes. Countless others are never known. The documentary "Undesired" tells their story.

Today, eighty percent of Indian states are now facing a shortage of women. To compensate for this differential, young, unknowing women are bought from surrounding countries like Bangladesh and sold to young bachelors. Not knowing a word of the language, these trafficked women now face the same kind of violence as other Indian women. The Alexia Foundation gave the grant to make this documentary possible. The Apne Aap Foundation was created in 2002 by Ruchira Gupta. It supports women and children by asserting their rights to dignified lives and livelihoods, by advocating their cause to trigger internal policy and institutional changes. A beautiful work of Jonathan Torgovnik, about the Rwandan genocide in 1994, were more than 1 million tutsi people were slaughtered in one week. Many of the Tutsi women were spared, only to be held captive and repeatedly raped. Many became pregnant and more than 20,000 were born of rapes. The International Community did NOTHING.
